What Is Sweet Potato Paratha?
Sweet Potato Paratha is an Indian flatbread made with boiled and mashed sweet potatoes directly into whole wheat flour dough. Unlike stuffed parathas, the sweet potato becomes part of the dough itself, creating a softer texture and adding a subtle natural sweetness.

The dough is flavored with kasuri methi, sesame seeds, Kashmiri chili powder, turmeric, and coriander powder, giving the parathas a delicious balance of earthy, savory, and slightly sweet flavors.
These parathas pair beautifully with yogurt, pickle, raita, or even a simple cup of chai.
Ingredients You'll Need To Make These Parathas

Sweet Potato- Boiled and mashed sweet potato adds moisture, softness, and a mild sweetness to the dough.
Whole Wheat Flour (Atta)- Forms the base of the dough and gives the parathas their traditional texture.
Sesame Seeds- Add a wonderful nutty flavor and a slight crunch.
Kasuri Methi- Dried fenugreek leaves add a distinct earthy aroma that pairs beautifully with sweet potatoes.
Powdered Spices- Kashmiri Chili Powder provides vibrant color and mild heat without making the parathas overly spicy. Turmeric Powder adds warmth, color, and depth of flavor. Coriander Powder brings a subtle citrusy earthiness to the dough. And Salt enhances all the flavors.
Avocado Oil -Used for kneading and cooking the parathas. You can use any oil you like.
Water- As needed to bring the dough together.
How to Make Sweet Potato Paratha

Step 1: Prepare the Sweet Potato
Boil or pressure cook the sweet potato until fork tender.
Peel and mash it thoroughly while still warm. Make sure there are no large lumps.
Step 2: Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine:
- Whole wheat flour
- Mashed sweet potato
- Sesame seeds
- Kasuri methi
- Kashmiri chili powder
- Turmeric powder
- Coriander powder
- Salt
- Oil

Mix everything together.
Gradually add water only as needed and knead into a soft, smooth dough.
Because sweet potatoes contain moisture, you may need significantly less water than usual.
Add a teaspoon of oil and knead for another minute until smooth.
Cover and let the dough rest for 15–20 minutes.

Step 3: Roll the Parathas
Divide the dough into equal portions.
Roll each portion into a smooth ball.
Dust lightly with flour and roll into a circle approximately 6–7 inches in diameter.

Step 4: Cook the Parathas
Heat a tawa or skillet over medium heat.
Place the rolled paratha on the hot skillet.
Cook until small bubbles begin to appear.
Flip and cook the other side.
Apply a little oil and cook both sides until golden-brown spots appear.
Repeat with the remaining dough.

For a complete meal, serve them alongside yogurt and a simple vegetable curry.
Tips for the Best Sweet Potato Paratha
Use Well-Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Smooth mashed sweet potatoes create an even dough and prevent tearing while rolling.
Don't Add Too Much Water
The sweet potatoes already contribute moisture. Start with little to no water and add only if needed.
Let the Dough Rest
Resting helps hydrate the flour and makes rolling easier.
Cook on Medium Heat
Cook on medium heat to ensure the parathas remain soft while developing golden brown spots.
Add More Herbs
Fresh cilantro, grated ginger, or finely chopped green chilies make delicious additions.
Variations
Extra Protein
Add a few tablespoons of roasted gram flour (besan) to the dough or shredded paneer. You can also blend silken tofu and add instead of kneading dough with water.
Kid-Friendly Version
My 10 month old son also eats these parathas. I am using Kashmiri red chili powder, which doesn't add heat to the parathas. Skip the chili powder if your kid can't tolerate spice. Pair these with yogurt to make it a full meal for your kid.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerator - Store cooked parathas in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer- Stack cooled parathas with parchment paper between each one and freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat directly on a skillet before serving.
