What are Energy Bites?
Energy balls are minimum effort, sweet and delicious treats that are made in 10-20 minutes!!! Filled with good-for-you ingredients, and makes for an easy on-the-go breakfast and snack! They are calorie-dense, so help you stay full for a long time!! I love having energy bites at home to take them along for snacks if I am out and about. I even pack them for my husband, for his commute every day because they are so healthy and filling!!! My favorite time of having them is right after lunch, so they help me curb those sweet cravings.
Types of Energy Balls
The energy bites are mostly commonly known as energy balls, high protein balls, vegan truffles, and many more names. Most commonly made with oats, dates, nuts butter, a few nuts, cocoa powder, and chocolate chips.
The recipe I am sharing today is made with Foxnuts. Foxnuts are a superfood, famously in India known as Phool Makhana. The Indian state of Bihar produces 90% of the world's foxnut production. Truly, India is a country that produces so many untapped superfoods. Foxnuts recently became popular and the most demanded superfood in the West!
These high-protein energy bites are super easy to make and very versatile. Use the ingredients you have in your pantry and make them!
Ingredients to Make This Recipe
- Foxnuts - These are famously known as Phool Makhana. Make sure you buy the unroasted makhanas from the grocery store.
- Other Nuts and Seeds - I am using almonds, cashews, walnuts, and pistachios. But you can use any nuts you have at home. I use
- Dates - I like to use Medjool dates in my recipes because of their soft chewy texture. And they add just the right amount of sweetness.
- Nut Butter - I use either creamy peanut butter or almond butter for this recipe. It helps the energy bites bind together and just taste so very DELICIOUS!!!
- Salt - Add salt only if your nut butter is unsalted.
- Saffron - I add 3-4 strands of saffron only for its benefits. You can skip it.
Expert Tips to Make These Energy Bites
- Roasting foxnuts until crispy, on medium flame. They take about 5-7 minutes to roast.
- I like to roast nuts and seeds as well. It takes the moisture out of them, so you can store them for a longer time.
- Use any nuts and seeds available in your pantry. If you don't have foxnuts, you can replace them with rolled oats.
- You can add dried berries, like cranberries, cherries, and goji berries too. They will add a delicious chewy bite to these energy balls.
How to Store?
Refrigerate the energy balls in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. You can also freeze them in a freezer-safe container or zip-lock bag for up to 3 months. You can dethaw them as needed overnight in the refrigerator.

Ingredients
- 2 Cups Foxnuts
- ยฝ Cup Almonds
- ยฝ Cup Cashews
- ยฝ Cup Walnuts
- ยฝ Cup Pistachios
- 2 Tablespoons Sesame Seeds
- 2 Tablespoons Pumpkin Seeds
- 2 Tablespoons Dry Shredded Coconut
- 1 Tablespoon Poppy Seeds
- 8 Medjool Dates
- ยฝ Teaspoon Salt
- 4-5 Saffron Strands Powdered (Optional) You can skip it.
- ยฝ Cup Nut Butter You can use any nut butter of your choice
Instructions
- Measure out all the ingredients and keep them aside.
- On a medium flame roast the foxnuts until crispy. It will take you about 5-7 minutes. Once roasted keep them aside.
- Next roast the nuts for 2-3 minutes. Just to reduce moisture from them. I usually freeze my nuts to increase their shelf life. If you store your nuts in your pantry, you can skip this step. Keep them aside.
- Now roast the seeds (sesame seeds, umpkin seeds, dry shredded coconut and poppy seeds) for a minute. Keep them aside.
- Now in a food processor add the roasted foxnuts (makhana), roasted alonds, cashews, pistachios and walnuts. Next add salt, medjool dates, saffron strands and nut butter.
- Coarsely grind all the ingredients mentioned above.
- Take it out in a wide bowl and use a cookie scoop to make the balls.
- Make equal sized balls. You can coat them with coconut powder or dip them in melted dark chocolate.

- You can skip adding if you don't have sesame and poppy seeds. You can substitute them with sunflower seeds and flax seeds. Or possibly any seeds you have on hand.
- Store them in the refrigerator or freeze them.ย
