Jeera Rice (One Pot Indian Cumin Rice

Basmati rice cooked in butter with some whole spices is all you need to make this rice at home. This recipe is restaurant-style jeera rice.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Basmati Rice
  • 3 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
  • 2 Tsp Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • 1 Large Cinnamon Stick
  • 4 Green Cardamom
  • 1 Star Anise
  • 1 Black Cardamom
  • 2 Green Chilies Slit
  • 2 Tsp Salt Add 1 Tsp Salt, If you are using Salted Butter
  • 4 Cups Warm Water
  • Fresh Finely Chopped Cilantro For Garnishing

Instructions

  • Wash and rinse 2 Cups of Basmati rice using tap water, until the water is clear. You will have to repeat this step twice or thrice.
  • Now soak the basmati rice for 10-15 mins. After soaking, Drain the water and keep it aside.
  • In a heavy bottom pot add butter.
  • Once it starts to melt, add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add all the whole spices listed in the ingredient list now.
  • Next add in the slit green chilies, rice and salt.
  • Toast the rice until it starts to smell aromatic and earthy.
  • Next add in 4 cups of warm water to the the pot.
  • Cook the rice on high flame until the water starts to boil. Keep stirring in between.
  • After the water starts boiling, cook the rice for another 5-7 mins the lid covered or until the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked. Keep stirring in between to make sure the rice doesn't stick to the pot.
  • Once the rice is cooked, garnish with fresh finely chopped cilantro.
